Associate Prof. YONEMURA, Chiyo specializes in family sociology and historical sociology. She is currently continuing research on the Japanese family system in modern times. Using the data from family laws, as defined by each family in the Edo or the Meiji era, she investigates, in her recent essay titled “Family Constitution and Ie in the Meiji Era,” how Japanese family norm changed in modern times. According to her research, people in those times had the strong intention to found or sustain their own `ie’ throughout many generations and tried to realize their ambition in various ways. These positive intentions must be understood as a value held among people in those times, not as a consequence of the feudal political system.
